Why Machine cannot replace Human
Engraving and calligraphy are two of the oldest forms of art that have been practiced for centuries. The intricate details and beautiful designs that can be created with a pen, ink, and a chisel simply cannot be replicated by machines. While machines have revolutionized many industries, including manufacturing and printing, there are some things that only the human touch can create. In this blog post, we will explore why machines can never replace hand engraving and calligraphy.
One of the main reasons why hand engraving and calligraphy cannot be replaced by machines is the level of skill and artistry required. Both of these art forms require a deep understanding of the tools used, the ink, and the surface being worked on. An experienced engraver or calligrapher knows how to manipulate their tools to create the desired effect, and this level of precision and artistry simply cannot be replicated by a machine.
Another reason why hand engraving and calligraphy are irreplaceable is the level of customization that can be achieved. When creating something by hand, an artist can tailor their work to suit the specific needs and preferences of their client. Whether it’s a unique design for a wedding invitation or a personalized gift for a loved one, hand engraving and calligraphy can be customized to suit any occasion.
In addition to this, hand engraving and calligraphy are both incredibly versatile art forms. Engraving can be used to create intricate designs on a wide range of materials, from metal and wood to glass and stone. Calligraphy, on the other hand, can be used to create beautiful lettering in a variety of styles and fonts, making it an ideal choice for everything from wedding invitations to certificates and diplomas.
I had the honour to collaborate with Charton Hobbs Inc. for their Lunar New Year activation to personalize on the Hennessy XO Cognac. Customers can choose between the option of machine font versus my hand script – see below picture of the comparison. I find that customers would prefer my hand script than the machine printing. For example, there is restrictions on number of characters (11-character max) on the machine, it cannot do patterns such as heart shape, the placement, scale and word shape are very limited. Based on all these restrictions, customers are bounded to their creativities hence they would prefer my hand script over the machine printing and it’s not only about the engraving that will be created – it’s about the experience where the customers can socialize with me to add their personalized touches/thoughts into it.
Hand engraving and calligraphy both have a unique charm and beauty that simply cannot be replicated by machines. There is something special about the imperfections and subtle variations that come with handmade art, and this is what makes hand engraving and calligraphy so special. The human touch adds a level of character and depth to the artwork that is simply impossible to achieve with a machine.
While machines have revolutionized many industries, there are some things that only the human touch can create. Hand engraving and calligraphy are two such art forms that cannot be replicated by machines. The level of skill and artistry required, the level of customization that can be achieved, the versatility of the art form, and the unique charm and beauty that come with handmade art all make hand engraving and calligraphy irreplaceable. So, the next time you need something engraved or a calligrapher to create a special piece of art, remember that only a skilled human hand can create something truly unique and special.
